What happens on your driving test?

📣 Important Information for Your Driving Test 🚗

If you have your driving test coming up, here's a helpful guide to make sure you're fully prepared:

Arrive Early: Please be in the waiting room at least 10 minutes before your test is due to start. Be mindful of learners finishing before your test, so don’t go in too early.

Check-In Process: The examiner will call your name and ask to see your provisional license. They'll check your photo and confirm if your address is correct. You’ll also read a declaration and sign their iPad.

Instructor/Accompanying Driver: You’ll be asked if you want your instructor or accompanying driver to join you during the test, and whether you want them present for the debrief (where the examiner gives you your result).

Eyesight & Show me/Tell Me Questions: As you exit the test centre, the examiner will lead you to your car and ask you to perform an eyesight check. Once in the car, you'll answer a "Tell Me" question (which might require opening the bonnet). You will also be 1 show me question, these can be found on the DVSA website.

Vehicle Check: The examiner will ask you to sit in the car while they check the vehicle for safety (tyres, etc.).

Test Overview: Once inside the car, they may offer to explain what will happen during the test. If there’s a sat nav, you’ll follow directions for the first 20 minutes, after which the examiner will guide you.

Driving Requirements: During the test, you will need to:

  • Pull up on the left twice
  • Pull up behind a parked car and perform an angled start
  • Complete a hill start
  • Perform one reverse manoeuvre (out of the four you've been practicing)
  • You might also be asked to do a controlled stop (emergency stop)

Test Result: At the end of the test, the examiner will provide your result, review any faults, and email your test report to the address used when booking.

Good luck! 🍀 Stay calm, stay focused, and you’ve got this! 😊
